It is always difficult for me to forget 21st of May. You can say it is that pointers and links thing when one event links to another and such that a chain of events are formed, you remember just one and one by one all of them start playing in your mind. In a similar way as a by product of some absolutely different episode in my life, 21st May 1991 is so difficult for me to forget.
One of the most sensational day in modern Indian history probably, when Rajiv Gandhi, both loved and hated, was brutally assassinated. It is really unfortunate that he could not see India..as of Today. But I think it was he, who had started that transition process for the Modern India..be it technology, liberalization or globalization.
The sheer inexperience, immense popularity, expectation and tremedous power (remember 404 seats out of 506 in Loksabha, with BJP securing just two in 1984 election) and ofcourse the ever present CONGRESS COTERIE around him certainly cost him dearly in his first term (1984-1989), but just by the time he had started realizing that, started learning from his mistakes one by one, and was coming out of that DreamWorld to the RealWorld, his life came to this sudden end on this day! Indian Voters were all too eager to give him another chance in 1991 elections.. It was not even 2 years of National Front (the alliance of the unlikes of BJP, CPM,JD) and people were already tired of them, but that part of chapter was never destined to be written probably.
Today on his 17th death anniversary I would like to share an article , I came across few weeks back...and I feel good about the way his son has started his journey...slow and steady, carefully avoiding the pitfalls his dad could not....and I am sure this Journey is Going to be a LONG ONE and he has a LONG ROLE to play in Indian Politics!
